I first heard the Hare Krishna Maha-mantra in the George Harrison song "My Sweet Lord". I wante dto get my church group to sing the song and we did once but without teh mantra. A couple of years later I was going home with my father on the subway in NYC from an interview about a high school and two devotees walked through the car and stopped at the end. I kept staring at them trying to think of a way of approaching them whenm one of them came over and gave me a small booklet "KRSNA Reservoir of Pleasure". Ity had some nice drawings of Krishna, two lecture excerpts about chanting, and a picture of Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada on the back. I read it literally thousands of times. I looked at it every night before I went to sleep.I definitely wanted to get what it talked about. A few years later a friend gave me an english only Bhagavad Gita As It Is which they had been talked into buying and didn't really want. While reading it for the third time I understood how difficult it would be for me to understand this on my own. I had to go to the temple if I was ever going to learn to do things properly. This was right after Jim Jone's followers had committed suicide and the common idea was that Hare Krishnas abducted people and brainwashed them into staying. I had a different idea, that I was unqualified to be a devotee and they would not let me in. A few times I got up early travelled into Manhattan with the idea of visiting the temple but I was so afraid that they would reject me that I was afraid to go in. I would wal around and around the block thinking "this time I will go in" and I would get on teh train and go home. I didn't know then that I wa sdoing something very traditional by circumabulating teh temple before entering. The first time I made it inside there was a lecture on Srimad Bhagavatam going on. People smiled and nodded at me and I sat there for about a half hour and left ecstatic that no one had thrown me out. Another time I went in the afternoon and there must have been some big festival going on because no one was there except one devotee who had just gotten out of the hospital. We talked a little. He gave me some sweet rice and burfi. That was it. I went home and got some books and clothes and moved in to the temple. That was almost thirty years ago and although I never really became a devotee or developed strong faith in Guru or Shastra, I consider even the worst of times attempting to engage in Krishna Consciousness to be superior by far to trying to suck some enjoyment from material life.

Really this mantra saved me in many dangers. i first heard this mantra in ISKCON Coimbatore from HH.Jayapataka swami maharaj on the temple inauguration in Coimbatore. at that time i was not interested in all these things. after that my parents started coming to this temple and then i also came.by hearing many lectures from senior devotees and according to their instruction i started chanting this mantra.very powerful and peaceful to mind and soul.then i got many association with devotees.within 2 years i had a chance to go or Sridham Mayapur for Panchatatva installation. at that time i was stunned to see lot of devotees from all over the world. then i realized about chanting.after coming from Mayapur i started chanting many rounds and day by day i increased the number of rounds and now i am standing in 16. really it is fully the mercy of Chaitanya mahaprabhu for being such a good devotee. all glories to Guru and Gauranga.

I have heard it said that all material and spiritual blessings can be had by chanting the Maha-mantra. The problem is that our senses are never satisfied so there is no real lasting happiness in trying to satisfy them. Real happiness comes from controlling the mind and focusing on service to Krishna. The easiest simple and practical way to do that is through chanting. In this loving service we can be truly happy and our minds satisfied. In this world having this taste of peace and love is more satisfying than all the vain imaginings of trying to find material happiness through the senses. I think that anyone who has practiced this for some time can attest to the fact. Most of us are dragged back to trying to enjoy by our senses and forgetfulness of Krishna and become miserable. The cure is association with devotees who are well established in Krishna Conciousness so that their enthusiasm for hearing and chanting will rub off on us. Only a crazy person can be happy in this world but a devotee is transcendentally crazy.

Yes prabhuji,i agree with this.
But for me, i follow what srila prabhupada said.

JUST CHAT FOR NOT BEING HUNGRY. Krishna is proving us food,if we can eat our food, why not we chant. i always say this to my friends and encourage them more.

I would say 'if you can eat 5 Chappati, why you chat only 4 rounds?' they will be quiet and think

The pull of maya is so strong, the reasons to delay chanting are always tempting us, but when we are strong and chant we may not realise the non-difference between Krsna and His Name but its true that is a fact. So when we chant our association with God is immediate and direct. All glories to the maha mantra

Ya prabhu.as we have born in this material world we should face all the problems. In each and every age we have problems.According to karma we should suffer.but chanting regularly with good consciousness and proper hearing or Sravanam of the mantra will improve a lot.this is true.also try saying all slokas which is present in Bhagavatgita in the front page before chanting.this helped to keep my concentration fully.anyway for first 8 rounds it will be somewhat ok.but the next 8 rounds it will be very nice.this is because of the taste of this mantra.also while saying all the slokas then Panca tatva mantra and then starting is really good for the mind and soul.try this prabhu.....Ofcourse being a female i face many material disturbances such as studies, other works in my home etc..i feel confortable in chanting.why because is only the taste.somedays i will not get more time to chant 16 rounds.at that i ll chant 8 rounds..what abt u prabhu....But the words "Chant and BE Happy" came true in my life.really nice.i ll feel very much when i dint get time to chant. we should not waste our time.time is precious prabhu......

Haribol prabhu. Really there is a big difference between chanting on Ekadesi compared to other days.because on ekadesi we r controlling all our senses. Tongue is the main sense. when we control that automatically all others will be controlled. on ekadesi we r not eating anything instead we fast. because of this slowly the senses, then mind and slowly intelligence will turn towards Krishna.hence while chanting on that time we can be peacefull in chanting. this is true.Hare Krishna...
